We're proud that students from The Murri School (Acacia Ridge) got started with TRACTION in February.
The Murri School is quite different from other independent schools. While it concentrates on the 'academics' with a strong focus on literacy and numeracy, it also fosters a number of other dimensions that prepare students for life in the 21st century. It's vision is “In respect of our peoples, our culture, our land, we foster an inclusive learning environment which promotes empowerment, identity and success through education". One of the joys of working with organisations like The Murri School is that it recognises that working in isolation is not productive and they acknowledge those who work with them to ensure positive outcomes for all students. We look forward to supporting students who will participate in the Bike Build and Small Engines programs at our Moorooka Workshop. Students from Beaudesert State High School and Flagstone State Community College have joined forces and are now participating in TRACTION at our Moorooka workshop. Youth Support worker Edmund, of Flipside Youth Service in Jimboomba, accompanies 7 students once day a week, where they are engaged in the Bicycle Build program.
We're delighted to have these new schools part of the program and are looking forward to helping the students complete their bike projects and build their own future! In 2016, TRACTION participants serviced special purpose bicycles for students of the Redland District Special School. It gave TRACTION participants to chance to give back to the community and help others. Read story.
We're stoked that the first students from the school have now joined TRACTION as participants in the Bicycle Build program at the Capalaba workshop. In a partnership with Cleveland District State High School, students from Redlands Special School will participate alongside students from Cleveland High as peers. All students from Redlands Special School face the challenge of intellectual disability and many also experience physical disabilities. It is fantastic that students from Cleveland State High have embraced their new team mates as part of TRACTION. The first students to participate are Travis and Jessy. Principal Andrew accompanies them one day a week when they spend time 'on the tool's in the TRACTION workshop. Fantastic news that students from St James College will participate in TRACTION at our West End workshop starting Term 2, 2017.
St James is a co-educational Catholic Secondary School located in Spring Hill and runs with a philosophy based on Gospel values and the tradition of Edmund Rice, the founder of Christian Brothers. The happiness of the individual, whatever his/her achievement is of vital importance. TRACTION is participating in Bicycle Queensland's "Bike Week" by holding an OPEN DAY on Friday 12th May at our West End workshop. Come along and see the program in action.

Mark has a massive portfolio but took the time to see the workshop and meet with us and key TRACTION supporter John Peterson (owner of Pro Honda the location of our Moorooka workshop). It's great when our elected representatives take an interest in TRACTION and get to understand the support we need to keep the program rolling so we can empower young people in need. Thank you Mark for your time. To find our more about Mark Bailey, visit him on Twitter or his website.
It's great when our elected representatives take an interest in TRACTION. Don Brown is the State Member for Capalaba and recently visited students from Capalaba State College to see the program in action at Shed 27.
Don recorded the following interview to help spread the word about TRACTION and the support we need to keep the program rolling. Thanks Don for visiting us. For more information about Don Brown MP, visit his Facebook page or website. |
