TORRENTIAL RAIN NO BARRIER TO FIRST BIKE BUILD WORKSHOP AT YARRABILBA

The first of three 1-day Bike Build workshops was held at Yarrabilba on Friday 23rd February despite torrential rain throughout much of the Logan and Scenic Rim regions. Thanks to a community development grant from Lend Lease and Bendigo Bank, TRACTION will deliver 3 workshops for 12-15 year old residents of the new masterplanned residential community at Yarrabilba. Yarrabilba will ultimately be home for 50,000 residents and significant investment is being made into infrastructure like schools and  community sporting facilities.

The TRACTION workshop provided an experience that the participants will never forget. The participants had fun whilst learning new skills and making new friends. Not only did the participants learn about bikes, they built practical and life skills in a work-like environment.

The workshop was received exceptionally well by participants and their families.

"Thank you so much for allowing my son to participate today. He had such a great day and learnt some amazing skills and  hasn’t stopped smiling since he got home!", said the mother of one of the participants.

"My son had such a great day and learnt some amazing skills. He  hasn’t stopped smiling since he got home!"

"Thank you all very much for allowing my son to participate yesterday. He had such a wonderful time and learnt a lot."

TRACTION programs are delivered by Mentors who provide positive role modelling and support for participants who work on their own project. TRACTION recognises not everyone hits their potential in a traditional classroom. It's programs provide the chance to get on the tools and build confidence and self-belief.

When the participants completed assembling their bikes it was smiles all round. Typically with TRACTION programs, participants refurbish second hand bikes donated by the community, however for the three Yarrabilba workshops, participants assemble brand new Academy brand BMX bikes worth $339 RRP. The look on the faces of the participants when they realised they'd get to keep the new BMX bikes was priceless!
Special thanks to Logan Councillor Laurie Koranski and Dean Patterson, Rob Moore and Julie Wood from Lend Lease for visiting the participants during the workshop and showing their interest and support for the program.

Thank you also to Diana Bryson from the Yarrabilba Jobs Exchange (Access Community Services) for helping host the participants and TRACTION team at the venue for the workshop at the "Yarrabilba Exchange", cnr Wongawallon and Shaw Streets.

Register for workshops 2 or 3

Two more workshops will be held in the coming months on 4th May and 15th June. Participation is FREE and spaces are available for up to 7 participants. Click the button below to register interest for your child to participate.
