SCHOOLS that we serve
For Schools, TRACTION provides the opportunity to better help students who may not be reaching their potential through traditional schooling.
Yeronga State High School (YSHS)The YSHS vision is 'Quality Pathways to Success' and the school provides opportunities for all students, irrespective of background and ability to access a broad range of knowledge skills and competencies.
Students from years 7, 8 and 9 participate in the TRACTION program at the Moorooka workshop. School contact: Matthew Peterson (Head of Department - Junior Secondary) Capalaba State College (CSC)Capalaba State College offers education from Prep to Year 12 ensuring continuity through all phases of learning. The College strives to support and encourage every individual student to reach their potential and feel a sense of belonging and pride in all that they do.
Students from Capalaba are fortunate to be supported by a superb teaching team, including Pride of Australia (Qld) Inspiration award winner Michael Quinn and Michelle Barlow. A select group of participants from years 8 & 9 at Capalaba College are engaged in the TRACTION Workshop for a full school day per week. “The students absolutely love the program. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience alternative learning outside the classroom and we already have more students who are eager to join the TRACTION program next semester.” Kylie Barrett, Capalaba State College Head of Junior Secondary (September 2015) Click here for more information about CSC. |
Inala Flexi Learning Centre (IFLC)IFLC is a ’Youth Plus’ centre within the Edmund Rice Education network that offers educational pathways for students who do not wish to access mainstream schools for a variety of reasons.
The school program provides students with numeracy, literacy, social and life skills. Relationships and value building are most important and focus on the 4 principles of Respect, Participation, Honesty and being Safe & Legal. School contact: Nigal De Maria (Head of Campus) Hemmant Flexi Learning Centre (HFLC)HFLC is also a ’Youth Plus’ centre within the Edmund Rice Education network and has been established to support young people disengaged from mainstream schooling. The Centre offers a program that encourages participation and active learning in a supported and connected way.
Participants from Hemmant Flexi attend TRACTION for half-a-day a week to develop workshop and practical experiences as they learn to renovate and restore bicycles with a view to establishing their own enterprise/market to sell their creations. "Whilst participants do develop skills by working on bike projects, TRACTION really focuses on broader life skills. The volunteer Bike Mentors are positive role models that emphasize taking pride in what you do and the importance of communication and social skills. This is very useful and reinforces what we do at school, encouraging the the students present themselves confidently. TRACTION is great because it allows students to put the skills they’ve learnt into practice while motivating them to create their own positive futures.” Renee Blote, Hemmant Flexible Learning Centre Youth Worker (September 2015) Click here for more information about HFLC. |
